Undoubtedly we've all felt it this last year, a "new wave" of life. We've all missed "normality" in one way or another.
At the beginning of the first lockdown I thought a lot about all the things I would miss doing, places I'd miss going and it got me thinking about techniques I had long since forgotten. So I used some of my spare time to reacquaint myself with inks. It's a medium I hadn't used since my teens. I remember how I loved the fluidity of it while it still retained its vibrancy.
As I couldn't visit the water, what else was I going to do but paint it?
So I started. And I watched the inks glide over the paper, softly soaking into the grain, dispersing and blending into harmonious hues. With every stroke of the brush I waited in anticipation for the colour to hit the masking fluid I'd laid carefully, hoping to achieve the appearance of sea foam on the waves. The satisfaction of when it's time to peel, reveal what shapes I'd managed to form, then adding another layer to deepen the scene. Fluffy clouds grew before me, light danced from sky to sea as the daylight broke through the pastel haze. Waves crashed softly above the deep blue, lapping soft ripples across the surface. Fine splashes of white flickering across the air from the nib of my pen, water turning to salty mist. And there I was, immersed in the view I'd dreamed in my mind, by the water, inhaling in the blue. It calmed me. I could breathe again. I was still again, comfortable in my New Wave.
